WOYWW: Art Journal Cards

A while ago I came across a creative meme that is called What's On Your Workdesk Wednesday. It is all about showing what is going on on your workdesk and is hosted by Julia from Stamping Ground. I really like participating, because it is an easy way to show you what I have been working on, and it is fun to visit some other participants :)

Lately I have been pinning all kind of things related to art journals. And I thought it would be fun to finally do something in that area. So when I saw a technique where you use gesso on patterned paper I got right on it!

I normally only use gesso to prime my canvasses, so this was new. After this point I got a huge block though not knowing what I could do next.

I ended up doing so simple stamping techniques, but it took me a few days to get there. And after that my block still wasn't gone.

The purpose was to make art journal cards from them all along. But I didn't know what would be a good moment to cut them apart. But yesterday I decided I would just do it, so I could continue collage style. This is how I left it yesterday and the picture was taken this morning and that would have been what I would have shown you.

But then finally the inspiration hit and I got ideas to make and finish one card! I am not sure if I should use varnish on it though. It would make it sturdier to send, but I have no idea what it will do to the looks of the card. That is something I will need to test first. That being said, if you have some tips or know tutorials on art journaling for beginners (note the beginner part), or even on how to finish off cards like this, it would make me really happy if you could share them. I myself want to share a link to a free 101 artjournaling online course by Kristal Norton that I am currently following. I am only at day 5 though, so probably more on that later.

  1. Hi and thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment, I have editied my post for WOYWW to include a link for the little Junk Journal i have been working on. Not been doing journaling too long to be honest, but I have had a few comments from people and friends on facebook as well so thought I would show you all what I used and what I did.

    Take care and Thanks again

  3. Me again.... I just used PVA glue to stick down the tissue paper, wasn't too fussy with it either because I wanted it textured and wrinkled. Hope that helps a little, completely forgot about mentioning it in the blog post so may need to go back and edit.

    Thanks for looking,

    Jackie x

    1. Thanks! I will experiment with that when I have an actual book :) I don't think it will work that well on cards, but maybe I am mistaken :)

  4. When you want to start with art journaling, you should definitely visit Julie Baltzer's blog and her series "art journal every day" (best start here: http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/balzer_designs/art-j.html ") Also, my online workshop "Let it Loose" is real popular and perfect for art journal beginners... I haven't planned a new date though, but if there are 7 or more on the waiting list, I start a new course. http://www.maritspaperworld.com/shop
And you might also like this Dutch forum for art journaling and mixed media: http://artjournaling.forum2go.nl/ (you can first take a look without registering. There's also reviews about "Let it Loose" - you can search for that (zoeken) if you like.

And then there's this: thanks for stopping by and your comment about my index cards. The ICAD event (where I submit my index cards) is not a 365 day project though, thank goodness! ICAD is only two months but I don’t make one card a day and I don’t follow the prompts – I make small series of my own whenever I feel like, so it does not feel like an ‘obligation or commitment’ at all.

    1. Thanks for your answer! I will check those links out! I really enjoyed your summer camp class, and I considered Let it loose before. However in September my education starts again which is also artsy, and I might not be able to do both. I need to see.

  6. I enjoyed watching your process, and the card has turned out lovely. Still really a beginner myself, one of my favourite artists to watch on youtube is Andrea Gomoll, also Gulfsprite is another one, or you could join 'Art Geeks' thats a free group with lots of journal help.

  8. Hello! I got an idea from another desker to visit everyone whose number ends the same as mine, so I'm visiting all the fivers today, and I don't think I've ever visited you before. Your art journal pages are stunning--love the colors! You have a really nice blog. Happy WOYWW! Sandy Leigh #95

  10. Hi Cynni, your journal cards look lovely and well done you for sitting down and starting a project - it is so easy to just look at other people's work and dream rather than have a go. Thanks for that link, I've bookmarked it and will be checking it out later! Thanks for your visit today, have a great week. MMx #59

  11. Love it! I must check out gesso, never heard of it before. Plus I need more ink stamps. And patterned paper. Haha. Thanks for reminding me! (It's not that I don't already spend a fortune on craft and mail thingies, lol.)

  14. What about some Gel medium over the top. That will set clear but offer some protection, although if we were to send that we would put it in an envelope to protect its loveliness.

Thanks for your visit to our blog earlier

  15. Love those papers and the card you made! I love art journaling and have done workshops with Lindsay Mason and Kate Crane but agree with Marit about checking out those links. I have a few links to art journal sites in my sidebar. Thanks for visiting, Chris96

  16. Thanks for the kind visit and b-day wishes today! I think your backgrounds are amazing, and your card is lovely! Someone is going to love receiving it! I have a Dyan Reeveley journal, and haven't used it yet. I am not sure where to begin, and for some wacky reason am afraid to mess it up. I have to take a class or something..ha. Enjoy the week! 19. Thanks for visiting my blog. Your art journal cards look great. If I were you, I wouldn't worry to much about learning to art journal. Techniques, yes, but only if you like to try new techniques. There are many many video's on you tube about art journalling and many tutorials, but from all of them, the main thing to take away is to do what you love and what you feel like doing. Don't over think it, just do.

And a great thing that I learned recently, Oops= outstanding opportunities presenting suddenly (by Carolyn Dube)

    Happy late WOYWW

  21. That is brilliant how you have used the papers to make the card. Great retro/ vintage look. What I love about journaling is there are no rules, no right or wrong. The permission to just do what you want on the pages. Just play and it will happen.
    Thank you for visiting
