Summary:
From Goodreads:
"Alice Howland is proud of the life she worked so hard to build. At fifty years old, she's a cognitive psychology professor at Harvard and a world-renowned expert in linguistics with a successful husband and three grown children. When she becomes increasingly disoriented and forgetful, a tragic diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer's disease changes her life.
As the inevitable descent into dementia strips away her sense of self, fiercely independent Alice struggles to live in the moment. While she once placed her worth and identity in her celebrated and respected academic life, now she must re-evaluate her relationship with her husband, a respected scientist; her expectations of her children; and her ideas about herself and her place in the world."
Personal opinion:
I heard many good things about this book, so when I found out they had it at the library, I was very happy. Being in the Netherlands, the selection of English books isn't that grand. Anyway, I really enjoyed reading this book. It is very realistic and also scary to read. This is one of those stories that is beautiful and painful at the same time. I think the author did a very good job here combining all these aspects of this disease into a wonderful story. I don't give full marks to books often, but this is a five star book. I can highly recommend it, and I will be on the lookout for other books from this author.
Loved it!
